Thríhnúkagígur, a dormant volcano near Reykjavík, is the only place in the world where visitors can descend into a magma chamber. The chamber, which is about 700 feet deep and over double the height of the Statue of Liberty with the pedestal, was built in 2010 for scientists and is accessible by an open cable elevator. The magma that fed the most recent eruption appears to have disappeared, and scientists believe it may have been sucked back into Earth's crust. Since 2012, visitors have been allowed to enter the magma chambers via an open cave elevator. However, it is unlikely that the volcano will erupt anytime soon due to its location within the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
