Nurses from The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBHC), represented by the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), protested against the 45-day termination of their health insurance benefits on Jan. 31. While other staff and management maintained their benefits, NYSNA nurses were left uninsured. The nurses called for the hospital's CEO, Gary Terrinoni, to acknowledge the crisis they are facing. The rally began at the hospital’s main entrance and wound its way to the outside of City Point, where TBHC CEO maintains a home. Despite receiving $15 million in state funds, only a partial payment was made towards the outstanding amount owed for health benefits, leaving coverage unreinstated. The financial strain has been mounting for years and hospital executives have requested $160 million in emergency state aid to avoid closure.
