Police Chief Won't Be Charged In Fatal Shooting Of Man Armed With Knives

On Sept. 30, 2025, Cheverly police officers were called to a home in Riverdale, Maryland, to investigate a vehicle possibly connected to two separate assaults. They encountered a man, later identified as Tesfa Leith, who they believed was armed and was chasing someone away from the home. As Leith approached them with two knives, a taser was ineffective and as Leith moved towards them, the police chief fired his gun on Leith. The Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division has concluded its investigation into the incident, concluding that Leith was not guilty of any crime under Maryland law.
