Bakersfield Police Department (PD) is replacing its Harley Davidson Electric Glide motorcycles with the BMW 1300. The BMW 1300 is a competitor to the Harley Davidson Classic, which has a lower RPM engine and more torque than the Harley, which can reach over 100mph. Bakersfield PD aims to get around 50,000 miles out of each bike and use them for various locations across the country. The new BMW is lighter weight and can accelerate with more ease compared to the slower Harley. The California Highway Patrol currently uses these bikes, with BPD now testing these BMWs for their own fleet. The plan to replace the Harleys with more BMWs in the future.
