Elon Musk's subsidiary of SpaceX, xAI, has been granted a permit by local environmental authorities to power AI data centers in Southaven, Mississippi by constructing 41 natural gas-burning turbines in an attempt to replace the industrial base of fossil fuels. Despite this, Musk has previously supported a carbon tax as a means of steering the market towards renewable energy and electric cars. He has expressed concern over the size of the industrial industrial base based on fossil fuels and stated that the true price on carbon emissions is not being paid. This comes after Musk spent an estimated quarter of a billion dollars to secure the election of Donald Trump in the 2024 election, and has also used economic threats to block an international carbon tax on shipping.
