The National Weather Service has confirmed no confirmed tornadoes have touched down in New Jersey, despite widespread damage caused by powerful winds that swept across the state late Monday night into early Tuesday morning. The strong winds caused trees and power lines to fall, and several cars and houses to be damaged. Despite these storms, meteorologists believe the damage was likely caused by straight-line winds from a strong cold front that triggered brief but fierce thunderstorms. The weather service is sending survey teams to parts of central Delaware and eastern Maryland for additional indications of a twister struck. The storm left a wide path of destruction, with scores of trees, power lines, and cars damaged by downed trees or wires. No injuries were reported, but many residents were left without electrical power and with lots of debris to clean up. Despite a tornado watch being placed under 16 of New Jersey's 21 counties, the watch was lifted shortly before 6 p.m.
