The Maricopa County Republican Committee condemned Schweickert's accusation, calling it "false and lazy" and aligning with "Democrat-style politics". The controversy was reignited by leaked audio of Biggs comparing himself to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The best available polling numbers show Biggs trailing in the Republican governor's race.
