The Indiana University Diabetes Impact Project (DIP-IN) is a yearslong effort to help three Indianapolis urban residential areas with above-normal levels of diabetes. The project, which focuses on the Northeast, Near West, and Near Northwest, has been funded by Eli Lilly and Co. for $12 million. The goal is to help reduce the state's adult-diagnosed diabetes rate of 11.2 percent, which is 60 percent higher than the national average. The original 2026 end date was recently extended by another year, cost-free. The program uses low-tech approaches and community health workers to reach out to patients who lack transportation, economic instability, and lack access to fresh, healthy foods.
