I have asked for advice on how to attract more birds to my garden, following a recent vacation sighting of a pink flamingo on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Winter is a good time to plan to enhance your garden with plants that will attract birds all year long. Birds need a complete habitat that includes food, shelter, nesting areas, and perching spots. Designing different vertical levels in your garden to attract different types of birds. Select plants that provide food for birds at different times of year, such as serviceberries, red-twig dogwoods, hawthorns and crabapples, and sunflowers. Choose a squirrel-resistant feeder and keep it open and convenient to refill, and maintain consistent feeding habits. Choose the best seed and feeder for small, black seed feeder designed for gold finches and black seed seed for goldfinches, while avoiding bags of mixed birdseed that contain a lot of filler, which most birds won't eat. Choose many types of seeds and feeders and choose a variety of food at different heights above ground. Use leaf litter in garden beds as an environmentally friendly way to recycle material and attract insects.
