NASA's Artemis program is a long-term effort to return humans to the Moon for the first time since the Apollo era and establish a permanent presence there as a stepping stone to Mars. The return of Artemis II, four astronauts who have traveled deeper into space than any other humans ever, is expected to occur at the Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland. The event was held at the Oakland space and science center ahead of the scheduled return of the Artemis II. The Artemis program began with Artemis I in 2022, an uncrewed test of the new Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket. Future missions will focus on building infrastructure such as a lunar space station and supporting longer-term exploration.
