Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) have identified a protein called FTL1 that accelerates cognitive dysfunction and can be reversed. The study compared young and old mice with their brains being flooded with the protein, and found that lowering FTL2 in older mice significantly improved their memory performance. The researchers also revealed that high levels of the protein act like a metabolic brake, slowing energy production within brain cells and causing connections between synapses to weaken. The discovery could potentially help prevent the brain drain associated with aging, making it considered a manageable biological setback.
