Some local officials are objecting to the Trump administration's announcement that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will start handling some security duties at U.S. airports amid an ongoing partial government shutdown. The move comes as roughly 50,000 Transportation Security Administration employees are working without pay, contributing to increased absenteeism and staffing shortages at airports nationwide. Border czar Tom Homan will oversee the effort, which includes additional immigration arrests. Aaron Vazquez, a TSA lead transportation security officer at the San Diego airport, said his job is to make sure travelers are not a threat to security and that ICE agents can monitor traffic of the passengers. San Diego City Councilwoman and Airport Authority Board Member Marni von Wilpert also expressed concern about the potential impact on travel and security.
