The Minnesota Fundraising Initiative (MNFI), a non-profit that supplied thousands of concession workers to sports venues across the Twin Cities, has shut down under a settlement reached with the state Attorney General's Office. The Attorney General’s Office alleges that the organization’�s “volunteers” were compensated in a way that skirted state wage laws. MNFI, which provided volunteers to major Twin Cities stadiums, has also cancelled its vendor contracts and voted to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The settlement alleges that MNFI's "grant making program’ was a sham that did nothing but pay wages in another form." The nonprofit, founded in 2019 by Martin and Patricia Cross, provided grants to youth through contracts with concession operators and claimed its grants helped families pay tuition and cover costs of educational programs, sports, dance, and other activities.
