NY businesses must now accept cash, but hundreds of NYC shops defiantly refuse — & devise creative work-arounds

A new state law in New York City now prohibits businesses from accepting cash, although hundreds of shops continue to escheat cash. The law, which aligns with a similar law already in place in the city, also prevents stores from charging more for customers who choose to pay with cash instead of plastic. State Attorney General Letitia James issued a consumer alert reminding people that credit card-only shops are now illegal. However, businesses can still refuse cash if they have reverse ATMs on their premises and do not impose a fee for their use. The only exception for business decisions are orders made over the phone or through the mail or if a customer pays with bills over $20.
