The doctor initially diagnosed Hugo with tonsillitis, but Charlene found something unusual and continued taking him to the hospital. Blood tests revealed that Hugo had leukemia, a form of blood cancer, and was immediately placed on a treatment plan that involved weekly chemotherapy. Charlene has had to stop working to care for Hugo, who requires intensive care during his treatment.
