Dozens of North Carolina fires still igniting daily, despite statewide burn ban in place, officials say

Over 100 wildfires have started in North Carolina since a statewide burn ban went into effect on March 28, according to the North Carolina Forest Service. Most of these fires were started by individuals, not by natural causes. Matthews Fire Chief Rob Kinniburgh warned of the potential for fast-moving brush fires. Since March 20, rangers have responded to 626 wildfires across North Carolina, with at least 114 of those fires started after the ban. More than 18,000 burn permits were canceled due to the ban, and foresters are urging caution.
