Homer Glen, Illinois, has approved a policy allowing the sheriff's office to store data obtained from its license plate reader cameras for seven days in an effort to balance public safety and privacy concerns. The village will also limit information collected from the cameras to be shared within Illinois. The policy was approved by the Village Board 5-1. However, exceptions include preservation requests for criminal investigations within that seven-day period or a valid court order or subpoena. The system was approved in December for 12 license plate readers on key access points in the village. Critics of the system argue it creates a mass surveillance network and tracks innocent people during their daily travels. The board is also considering updating its Long Run Creek watershed action plan, which could cost about $50,000.
