SAVE America Act: What the election overhaul bill would do

The Senate is set to debate legislation that could overhaul federal voting requirements, the SAVE America Act, which is President Donald Trump's top legislative priority. The bill would require individuals to show a passport or birth certificate to register to vote and a photo ID, such as a driver’s license, at the polls in all 50 states. It also mandates states establish programs to identify and remove noncitizens from voter registration lists. However, critics argue that the bill would disenfranchise some voters, particularly those who have changed their names. The House passed an earlier version of the bill in February.
