A New York man, Lu Jianwang, has been convicted of acting as a foreign agent and obstruction of justice in relation to opening a secret Chinese police station in lower Manhattan. The court found him guilty of two counts but acquitted him on a charge of conspiracy to act as an agent. The secret police station was allegedly used to track and harass Chinese dissidents living in the US. Lu's lawyer, John Carman, claimed that the office was a place where Chinese citizens living in U.S. could renew their Chinese driver’s licenses remotely and play ping-pong and mahjong. The guilty verdict comes after a day of deliberations.
