Spring is one of the most volatile seasons in the United States due to the transition from cold air to warm air, which often produces uneven bad weather. AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham explains that spring is a transitional period, with lingering cold air from winter clashing with strengthening warmth and moisture surging northward from the Gulf. This combination of temperature contrasts, moisture, and atmospheric energy makes spring the peak season for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, large hail, and damaging wind gusts. Spring flood risks are often overlooked due to heavy rain falling on saturated ground or melting snowpack, which can escalate into flash flooding within hours. The National Weather Service warns that even experienced residents can underestimate how quickly conditions can turn life‑threatening. Other spring weather dangers include high-wind and fire-weather warnings during spring, late-season snow and hard freezes.
