Recent federal legislation has highlighted the risk of gender-affirming care for youth in the U.S. for individuals under the age of 19. The "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" includes provisions that reduce federal spending on programs such as Medicaid over an estimated 10 years. These restrictions also affect families' financial circumstances. Minnesota officials have responded to these federal actions through legal challenges. Attorney General Keith Ellison joined a coalition of 20 states in a lawsuit against the Department of Health and Human Services, accusing the agency of limiting access to gender-friendly care for young people. An estimated 270,000 transgender youth rely on Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program, also known as CHIP. Medical professionals have also expressed concern about the potential effects of these policy changes.
