A $2 million grant has been awarded to Mutual Ground in Aurora, a non-profit organization that provides an emergency shelter for those fleeing domestic and sexual violence. The grant will be used to renovate the historic home, which was first built in 1853 and is now in need of extensive repairs. The work will be limited to the most historic part of the building, not the newer addition built on. The $2M will cover roof replacement, facade improvements, window replacements, mechanical work, electrical work and the abatement of toxic substances. The larger project, set to include even more extensive renovations and the construction of a new building on the campus, was delayed due to insufficient funding.
