Election Integrity: Proof of citizenship bill

A bill that would require state election officials to confirm voter's citizenship through a federal database is close to becoming law in Tennessee. Governor Bill Lee can either sign it, or allow it to become law without his signature. The state has until 2028 to create a portal that would allow county election leaders to access the federal "SAFE" program to confirm citizenship. However, critics argue that the program has already misidentified people as ineligible voters in other states and that it will not significantly impact the state's 4.3 million eligible voters. The bill is among a handful of measures being pushed by the Trump Administration in state legislatures across the country.
