Solar power drives a renewables inflection point

A new analysis by Ember, a clean energy think tank, has revealed that global electricity generation from renewables edged past coal in 2025, helping to keep CO2 emissions from power flat even as consumption increases. The International Energy Agency also found that coal and renewables had a combined 34% share last year. Despite this, solar power continues to grow significantly, accounting for nearly 8.7% of global generation.
