Four US Navy divers were the first to greet NASA's Artemis 2 astronauts when they splashed down in the Pacific Ocean after their historic journey around the moon. The dive medical team, Lt. Cmdr. Jesse Wang, Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman Laddy Aldridge, Chief Hospital Corp. Vlad Link, and Hospital Corpseman 1st Class Steve Kapala, were tasked with opening the Orion spacecraft, named "Integrity," and assisting the crew to exit the capsule safely and efficiently. The divers' role marked a new step for missions, while Navy divers have long supported astronaut recoveries dating back to the Apollo era. The team's preparation for the Artemis 2 mission involved extensive training and practice with Orion mockups in open water.
