A report by CBRE has stated that the rise in artificial intelligence (AI) could rival the scale of the railroad expansion of the 1850s. Big tech companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are expected to spend $3.7 trillion on AI infrastructure over the next five years. Julie Whelan, head of occupier research at CBRE, called the build-out of AI infrastructure "historic" and should position the U.S. to remain globally competitive with a growing economy. The report also revealed that nearly 80% of American companies are using AI, but 90% report little impact on their business so far. CBRE acknowledged there are doomsayers and skeptics about AI’s impact on jobs, with predictions ranging from massive displacement to a utopian outcome. However, it noted that job composition will likely change more than job count.
