Brazil's Finance Minister, Fernando Haddad, is expected to announce his candidacy for governor of Sao Paulo, giving President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva a key ally on the campaign trail. HADDad, who announced in late 2025 that he would leave the Finance Ministry early this year, initially intended to advise Lula on his October reelection bid. However, he has since confirmed his intention to run for Sao Paulo governor. His deputy, Dario Durigan, is set to run the finance ministry in his absence. This announcement comes as part of a series of unsuccessful campaigns, including losing the Sao Paulo mayoral election in 2012 and the 2018 presidential contest.
