Cleveland.com has broken down how property tax bills are split among cities, schools, parks, and other entities in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The analysis revealed that while schools make up the largest portion of the bill, city taxes are increasing much faster than those for other entities. The report also revealed that the city and village portions of the overall tax bills increased by at least 25% in over half of Cuyhoga County communities. This increase is due to inflation protections established by House Bill 920, allowing municipal tax revenue to increase at the same rate as property value increases. The state has since reduced how much state tax dollars are shared for local purposes and implemented reforms to limit school gains from increasing property values.
