Feral pigs, also known as feral hogs or wild pigs, are expanding into suburbs, tearing up lawns, parks, and golf courses, and unnerving residents. These animals are often found rooting into soil to search for food, which can quickly destroy carefully maintained landscapes. Urban rules restrict traditional control tools like night shooting, aerial hunts, and some toxicants. Agencies are now focusing on cooperative trapping, outreach, and science-based planning with cities and HOAs. Feral pigs are found in at least thirty-five states and their agricultural losses from these animals have been estimated at over $100 million annually. The issue of feral pigs settling near neighborhoods involves wildlife behavior, property damage, public safety concerns, and community planning.
