Suffolk signals its opposition to immigration detention centers

Suffolk, Virginia, is planning to notify large property owners who own at least 100,000 square feet of property that they oppose the sale of land and facilities to federal agencies for the purpose of creating new detention facilities. The decision was unanimous at a city council meeting. There is no indication that Immigration and Customs Enforcement have attempted to purchase land in Suffolk. However, council members believe these letters will serve as a proactive step if agencies come knocking. Only limited properties that can be converted into detention facilities can be legally converted, such as industrial sites such as the Westport Commerce Center, Virginia Regional Commerce Park, Coastal Logistics Center and Bridgeway Business Center, cannot be used for detention purposes.
