The most popular Cuban dessert, pastelito de guayaba, is a pastry or mini pie made up of guava paste or jam. Pastelitos can also be savory or even filled with meat. The most prominent pastelito is not just found in Miami, but can be found all over Florida, particularly in southern parts. The Cuban Revolution of the 1950s led to an influx of Cubans seeking asylum, leading to the formation of Miami's Cuban Refugee Emergency Center in 1960. Over 600,000 refugees from Cuba sought asylum in Miami alone. The tropical fruit's sweet, floral taste becomes more distinct when it's cooked down and concentrated in a paste.
