On the campaign trail, nearly all Democratic primary candidates across the country are identified as "fighters," a term coined by liberal activists in response to President Trump's actions. The term has been used in ads by progressive candidates who want to shift the party to the left and urge leadership to take a more aggressive stance against the Trump administration. In Illinois' 9th House District, all three major candidates had ads featuring their experiences with ICE. Other candidates included Rep. Christian Menefee (D-Texas), Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D) and Rep. Michael Schoen, a centrist who ran unsuccessfully for New Jersey governor, and AIPAC-linked PACs supporting more moderate candidates in those same primaries.
