The OpenAI Foundation, the nonprofit that controls OpenAI, has announced plans to invest at least $1 billion in the next year across four programme areas, Alzheimer’s, jobs, AI resilience, and community. The announcement is part of a significant transformation from the company's previous move into a for-profit subsidiary, OpenAI Group PBC, which effectively left the nonprofit in ultimate control. This investment is an early tranche of the $25 billion commitment announced last October. Jacob Trefethen and Wojciech Zaremba have been brought on to lead this work, with the latter overseeing more than $500 million in science and health grantmaking under Trefethendhen. Anna Makanju will be Head of AI for Civil Society and Philanthropy, leading work leveraging AI to help nonprofits, NGOs, and philanthropic institutions.
