A coalition of Democratic states, including California, Massachusetts, Nevada and Washington, have filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump's executive order restricting mail ballots. The states argue that the order violates the Constitution, which gives states the responsibility to run elections and allows Congress to override state regulations. The White House has defended the order, stating it is necessary to ensure election security and crack down on noncitizen voting. The order requires the Department of Homeland Security to compile a list of voting-age U.S. citizens living in each state and provide that information to state officials at least 60 days before each federal election. It also requires the postmaster general to require every outbound mail ballot be in an envelope with a tracking barcode.
