Top open-source maintainers have found that AI has become more useful to open-community software, particularly in the JavaScript NPM ecosystem, where about half of the most downloaded NPM packages are maintained by one person. This shift is due to the increasing number of open-server projects with only a single maintainer. Greg Kroah-Hartman, maintainer of the Linux stable kernel, found this change in the AI-generated security reports that were often wrong or low quality. When used properly, AI can help clean up old but still used code, maintain abandoned programs, and improve existing code.
