The New York Times has revealed that star chef Rene Redzepi's abusive tactics at Noma, the world's top restaurant, were likened to those of a cult leader. The restaurant was exposed as a creative institution that built and sustained its reputation on physical and psychological workplace abuse. The Times reported that RedzEPi would assault and degrade employees in the pursuit of his exacting standards, including punching underlings, striking them with kitchen implements and slamming them against walls. He also threatened to use his influence to get them blacklisted from restaurants around the world, their families deported, or their wives fired from their jobs at other businesses. The chef has since apologized.
