The stakes for Gophers hockey are big for the team: win big or go home, compete in national championship games or find another job. The University of Minnesota's athletics director, Mark Coyle, introduced Greg "Boom" May to succeed Brad Frost as the women’s head coach, while Bob Motkzo is expected to succeed him as the men’s coach. Both programs are rich in national titles and are expected to be successful in college hockey. May, who was promoted from associate head coach to head coach after agreeing to terms on a four-year contract, will succeed Frost as head coach. The men's position remains unfilled, but this should change soon. The Gophers are one of five that receive direct payments from the $20.5 million NCAA revenue pot, one of three currently make money for Minnesota. Coyle also mentioned that the women's basketball team's NCAA tournament home games at Williams Arena were a bonus money-maker for the program.
