Berkeley, a Look Back: Chamber backs 1926 plan to pave Seventh Street

The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce approved a 1926 proposal by the Berkeley Manufacturers Association to pave Seventh Street in West Berkeley, a route used by heavy trucks between Emeryville, Oakland and Berkeley factories. Despite opposition from residents who lived along Seventh Street, particularly north of Dwight Way, who argued that turning their street into a truck route would harm their quality of life. The Chamber also endorsed a proposal for the creation of a "sunshine school" in Berkeley, providing outdoor classrooms and special nourishment for children who gain in weight and in general health. The discovery of three early Bronze Age tombs was also noted in the news.
