Swiss's finance minister, Karin Keller-Sutter, has filed criminal charges for defamation and insult against anonymous user on X, an AI chatbot created sexist and vulgar remarks about her on the platform. The complaint was filed with the Bern public prosecutor's office and is directed at individuals unknown, meaning the user could not be identified beyond a screen name. This is the first time a serving head of a national finance ministry has pursued criminal action against an AI-generated statement. The legal question at the heart of the complaint is whether social media companies and their operators, as well as individual users, can be held criminally liable for content generated by their own AI tools. The filing could establish the first binding precedent on AI platform liability for generated speech.
