Gendarmerie patrols ‘Tortoise Valley’ to protect wildlife
Published on July 17, 2026.
Gendarmerie teams in the central province of Nevşehir have been patrolling a road with a dense population of tortoises for seven years, aiming to protect wildlife and motorists alike. Along the Alacaşar-Tatlarin road, officers from the Provincial Gendarmery Command regularly stop to move tortois safely off the roadway during their patrols, particularly during the animals' breeding season. The initiative aims to prevent tortoisers from being hit by vehicles and reduce accidents caused by drivers swerving or stopping to avoid them. Staff Sergeant Mehmet Gedik, commander of the Public Order Team at the Central District Gendarherie Command, stated that these efforts contribute to conservation of natural life and improve road safety at the same time.
