Stateside budget directors to join gov’t officials, economists to discuss revenue prediction.

The Financial Oversight and Management Board (FoM) is hosting a symposium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to discuss the effectiveness of revenue prediction for the government. The event is part of a larger effort by the Puerto Rico government and oversight board to improve economic and revenue estimates. This comes after years of overly optimistic forecasts that led to repeated budget deficits. The Financial Oversight Board has identified a fragmented approach to revenue forecasting in Puerto Rico. The symposium will bring together budget directors from six U.S. states to examine how revenue forecasting supports responsible budgeting. Since the oversight board approved its first budget for fiscal year 2017, deficits have been eliminated. However, officials warn that lasting changes will require lasting changes to how forecasts are made.
