Much of this plastic ends up in landfills or in the environment, releasing harmful chemicals and planet-warming gases. This strain on the environment and endangers wildlife and ecosystems. Companies often pass on the costs and responsibility for proper disposal to shoppers. Several companies have developed plastic alternatives that are more eco-friendly and easier to recycle.
