Canada's unemployment rate rose to a six-month high in April, according to Statistics Canada. The economy lost a net of 17,700 jobs in March, indicating a continued weakness in the labor market. Analysts had predicted a job gain of 15,000 and the unemployment rate of 6.7%. The Bank of Canada noted that indicators such as employment rate, hours worked and job vacancies suggest underutilized capacity in the workforce. The unemployment rate among the core-aged workforce of 25-54 year-olds and youth increased to 6.9% in April. The job losses were largely concentrated on full-time jobs, offsetting a gain of 29,000 jobs in the part-time sector.
