The Brazilian film industry is undergoing a transformation, with Silvia Cruz, founder and head of the Brazilian distribution company Vitrine Filmes, introducing The Secret Agent to exhibitors with a nonlinear narrative and 161-minute runtime. Despite a budget of approximately $5 million, The Secret agent sold over 2.45 million admissions nationally, which if translated to standard American ticket prices, would equal over $40 million. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and received four Oscar nominations, becoming the second consecutive Brazilian film to be nominated for both best picture and best international film.
