Arizona has lost about 90% of its snowpack in just three weeks following a record-breaking heat wave, according to a survey by the Salt River Project (SRP). The snowpack, which acts as a slow-release savings account that supplies Phoenix's largest reservoirs, is rapidly decreasing. The researchers from Arizona State University and SRP have been tracking the snowpack using a new airborne survey that measures snow across the entire watershed, not just one spot. Despite the rapid decrease in snowpack being seen, experts say it can lead to more runoff due to the rapid melting of the snow.
