The Tennessee Highway Patrol is in discussions with facial recognition software provider Clearview AI, a firm that can identify suspects using a massive database of online photos. The software is based on billions of publicly-available photos and can be used to search for online matches in a searchable database. However, Tennessee Attorney General Johnathen Skrmetti has expressed deep concern over the potential for invasion of privacy by Clearview's software, which he signed onto an anti-privacy coalition challenging last year's ruling in an Illinois lawsuit against Clearview. The coalition argues that Clearview has collected billions of images without their consent for use in its searchable facial recognition database. The ability to identify individuals has been particularly appealing to law enforcement agencies such as the Nashville Airport Authority and Louisville airport.
