World Athletics has denied the application to transfer Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili's national allegiance to Turkiye, stating that the move was part of a government-funded recruitment campaign that threatened international competition and the development of homegrown athletic talent. The World Athletics Nationality Review Panel unanimously ruled that approving the transfer would compromise the World Athletics Transfer of Allegiance Regulations. Ofili, a 23-year-old sprinter, holds the Nigerian women's 200m record and world 150m record. The case has been highlighted as part of controversy over Turkiy's efforts to recruit established international talent for the 2028 Olympic Games. The panel found that the recruitment strategy directly undermined three core principles of the Transfer of Alteriance Regulations: protecting the credibility of national representative competition, encouraging member federations to invest in developing domestic talent, and ensuring young athletes can pursue national team pathways without fear of being overlooked by athletes recruited from abroad.
