Former Labour minister, Rushanara Ali, has called for a ban on political donations made in cryptocurrency to be implemented in the UK. Ali argues that these donations could be used to circumvent existing donation laws and potentially enable foreign interference in our democracy. She also highlighted several ways of combining large donations into smaller amounts via crowdfunding to bypass reporting thresholds. Other UK MPs have also advocated for a blanket ban on crypto donations, with seven Select Committee Chairs urging for an explicit provision to disallow such donations. Advocacy groups like the UK Anti-Corruption Coalition and Spotlight on Corruption have also voiced concerns about the Electoral Commission's lack of ability to properly regulate these risks.
