Cook County assessor candidates grapple over the reasons for skyrocketing property taxes

The Democratic primary contest for Cook County assessor pits two incumbent and challenger, Fritz Kaegi, against Pat Hynes, who argues that reforms in the office have led to increased property taxes. Hynes has the support of the Cook County Democratic Party, the Chicago Federation of Labor, building trade unions, and the Building Owners and Managers Association. Meanwhile, incumbent KaEGi criticizes Hynes' campaign donations, which include several property tax appeals attorneys and appraisers, as an ethical issue and suggests that his practices would be more favorable towards big businesses. Kaegei's campaign has also accused Hynes of misleading statements about the office's improvements and Kaegegi's own home bill. The assessor's office, which uses data and modeling, can drastically change values and make the office’s political tightrope shaky.
