U.S. Senator, Sen. Andy Kim, who was pepper-sprayed outside Delaney Hall, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, after visiting the facility in support of detainees who are protesting their treatment, including lack of air conditioning and fresh food, during a hunger strike. Kim, D-New Jersey's junior senator, spoke of the chaos at the facility and the "lawlessness of the Trump administration" that led to the conditions inside and out. The incident occurred on the same day as Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill was denied entry to the facility by the Department of Homeland Security (ICE). Kim accused armed federal officers of using pepper balls and pepper spray during a confrontation with the crowd. The Department for Homeland Security called Sherrill's visit a political stunt on Memorial Day due to riots outside the facility.
